Search Engine Evaluator jobs are one of the most sought-after remote jobs. The reason is search engine evaluator jobs are very stable compared to freelancing gigs, where you need to find clients consistently.

Also, it is a flexible job and unlike other full-time remote jobs such as QA or Customer Support, you are in full control of managing your work schedule.

Contrary to most available remote jobs, applying for a search engine evaluator job requires no prior work experience.

Hence, it is a perfect remote job for college students, stay-at-home moms, retired persons, or even someone working full-time wanting to supplement his income.

I’ve worked as a Search Engine Evaluator from October 2018 to April 2021. I was working full-time too back then but within a few months, I quit my full-time job and went full remote.

So if you have any doubt over this job being another internet scam, fear not. As long as you maintain the required quality of work, it is just like another stable private company job.

That too without a boss looking over your shoulder!

Earlier, there used to be around 6-7 companies that listed search engine evaluator jobs. However, ZeroChaos company stopped hiring and Appen acquired Leapforce in late 2017.

These 4 companies are hiring search engine evaluators as of now:

  • Appen Connect ( Hires Worldwide )
  • Lionbridge ( Hires Worldwide )
  • Teemwork.ai ( Hires Worldwide )
  • Raterlabs ( Hires in the USA )

Let’s check out these companies in depth.

1. Appen Connect

Appen Connect, formerly known as Leapforce hires for different projects mainly:

  • Search Engine Evaluation/Internet Analyst
  • Social Media Evaluation
  • Translation
  • Projects from Microsoft
  • Surveys
  • E-commerce testing

Out of these various projects listed, the project that you should aim for is Search Engine Evaluation Project as it is a long-term project.

As long as you maintain the required quality, your contract will keep on getting renewed and you can keep on working for many years.

You can work up to a maximum of 35 hrs per week. You can also work on more than one project simultaneously.

Appen Connect Hourly Rate:

Appen Connect pays more than the minimum wage. The hourly rate is different for different regions. To give you an idea, here is an hourly rate breakdown for you:

  • USA:  $13.5/hr
  • UK:   $14/hr
  • Asian Countries: $7/hr
  • India: $3-3.5/hr

Some projects pay as high as $24/hr but for those projects, you need to have a college or equivalent degree in the subjects mentioned in those projects.

Appen Connect Payment Method:

Their preferred method of payment is Payoneer. They pay us within the NET 15 days term.

Simply put, you will receive the payment for January by the 15th of February.

I’ve been using Payoneer for a long time and I can verify that not only Payoneer is fast and reliable, they also have a very responsive customer support team.

I’ve never faced any problems during transactions while using Payoneer. Also, their transaction rates are low as compared to Paypal.

So before signing up to work for Appen Connect, you need to create an account with Payoneer.

If you signup for Payoneer and create an account now, you will also receive a $25* bonus as soon as you are paid $1000 to your Payoneer account.

The exam study materials are provided and you’re given a timeframe of 7-10 days to clear those rounds.

Lionbridge is based in Ballina, Ireland, and has its corporate office in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. It employs independent contractors worldwide throughout the year.

They hire Search Engine Evaluators as Personalized Internet Assessor, Web Content Assessor, Internet Analyst, Raters. They also hire Social Media Evaluators as Social Media Assessors.

The job title is different but the nature of work is the same as that of Search Engine Evaluators.

Just like Appen Connect, Lionbridge’s rate of pay varies by project, locale, and admission date.

The hourly rate of Lionbridge is higher than that of Appen Connect. Their usual pay rate is $14-15 per hour for the US and UK regions.

For Asia and Africa, the pay rate is around $7-9 per hour.

Usually, you’re given two attempts. The passing percentage is 85-87%. The exam is not easy so make sure you prepare well.

4. Raterlabs

Raterlabs was a sister company of Leapforce, which was created specifically to hire in the US region.

With the acquisition of Leapforce, Appen has also acquired Raterlabs as well.

Even though, Raterlabs still function as a separate entity, the website of the Raterlabs and Appen Connect, looks almost the same.

Search Engine Evaluator Jobs FAQs

What does Search Engine Evaluator do?

A search engine evaluator evaluates web pages and websites and judges their quality. The main work of a search engine evaluator is to rate the relevance and helpfulness of a result to a query issued by a user.

How long does it take to hear back from the companies after applying?

From a few days to within a month. In some rare cases, it takes up to 3-4 months. If they don’t get back to you within 6 months, you may re-apply again.

Who are the main clients of these companies?

Google and Microsoft. As a search engine evaluator, you work indirectly for Google or Bing and make their search engine better.

How to write a CV or resume for search engine evaluator position?

Now there is no hard and fast rule for this but here is my personal take on this:

  • Try to go for a single-page CV.
  • No need to write a cover letter.
  • No need to attach your photo.
  • Make sure that you don’t leave any gap years in your academic and professional details.

How to pass the search engine evaluator job qualification test?

Before appearing for the test, you will get a 164 page General Guidelines to study.

As soon as you get it, read it thoroughly. You will need at least 15-17 hours to cover all of the concepts and to go through all the examples.

Personally, I read the guidelines for two days and appeared for the first theoretical test on the 3rd day.

I used the 4th day to appear for the second exam and the 5th and 6th day to appear for the last round.

The last round is the most difficult of the three and requires you to use your PC/laptop and your smartphone simultaneously.

Is This a Good Remote Job?

I really enjoy it. The schedule is pretty flexible. It’s non-phone work. The pay is also decent.

You also don’t need any special equipment or prior work experience. You just require a PC or a Mac and high-speed internet. There are even some projects that require just a smartphone.

What are some of the disadvantages of this role?

Sometimes, the work can be somewhat limited depending on the project. That means your hours may be limited.

There’s also a good chance the project will eventually end and you may have a waiting period between projects.

Since this is a contract-based position, you’ll have a contract end date. If your work was up to company standards, your contract is extended automatically.

Can I work for both Appen and Lionbridge simultaneously?

These companies have a non-compete clause in their contract. That means you can’t work for more than one of these companies at a time.

At the time of applying, your IP address gets registered in their system along with other details. Also, these companies use similar rating tools and have the same clients.

So, they can easily find out if you are trying to pull a fast one. You might end up getting flagged and get barred from applying again.

Conclusion

I worked as a Search Engine Evaluator for more than 2 years. I believe this is the best work-at-home job for moms, students, introverts, and anyone who likes to work from home.

Also now I’ve in-depth knowledge of what SEO is and why certain pages rank higher in Google search while others don’t.

I hope this article clears some doubts about where to find search engine evaluator jobs.

Do you want access to 30,000+ more remote and flexible jobs? Click here.

I believe during remote interviews, we struggle more in answering the behavior questions properly and showcasing our soft skills. Candidates usually overlook this but preparing for behavioral rounds is very crucial.

You’ll find a lot of Youtube videos on this topic. I would also recommend this course by Bob Firestone that has over 177 example answers that work for competency-based, KSA, situational, structured, and behavioral interviews.

Make sure you send a cover letter along with your resume when applying for remote jobs. Simply sending a CV and hoping to get a call back is really not a great way to show the company that you are interested in their job.

You can download the resume and cover letter templates that helped me get my first remote job by going HERE.

And never forget to use the free Chrome plugin, Grammarly, while writing your resumes, emails, and cover letters. This would highlight any silly grammatical mistakes and save you from possible embarrassment as a job seeker.

Let me know in the comments if you’ve applied for this role and how was your experience.
